THE OLD LAUNDRY CHUTE
A kickoff to the second half of the January renovation pictures. There was no good way to cut it with a saw, so I drilled a series of closely spaced holes and just knocked it out.

KNOCKED OUT
A little rough, but it gets a new frame.

CEILING PATCH
Remember the pink foam and metal? Looking much better now.

ANOTHER VIEW

CEILING AND WIRES
There were a few areas where the ceiling was very rough - above the HVAC lines. I tried my best to scrape and and them. I also tried filling in massive amounts of drywall compound. In the end, it looked ok, but there was not much more that could have been done. The wires were a visual problem, but had to remain in place.

PATCHWORK
Above the window in the TV area. I knocked out the nasty curved plaster, and cut some of the lathe away, then it was time to make it look better.

UHM, YEAH
I performed a spot check of the new stair landing / platform. That's the halfwall in the background.

NOT BUYING IT?
Really, I crawled in there to cut out some electric lines. I had spliced in an outlet between the garbage disposal and one of the existing 3 outlets in the basement. Problem was that the garbage disposal wire went around the basement door. So, snip snip went the line. But I had to crawl under there to get the wire out. Quite a chore as I had to undo some of the wire clamps I had put into place (before there was drywall up).

WASTE LINE
There were cats looking in at me from the rest of the basement, but I was unable to document to occurrence.

TITLE
The drill was too big to use, I had to use the screwdriver, quite the chore really.

SPIDER
I'm not scared of normal spiders (which this guy is), but I had no space to move if this one decided he needed to crawl in my ear. The underside of the platform is only a few inches taller than my nose.

CHANGE IN PLANS
Originally there was going to be a wet bar. The slot you see against the wall was mean to be space for the sink's waste line. This idea was dropped soon into the process, but clearly not before the stairs were built. So, I had to infill the gap.

STAIR RISER
I had to chisel out spaces to accommodate space for the joist hangers.

LAUNDRY ROOM
One person got the last reference I made (though maybe not fully). So here's another more direct question. Name the three word title that was the name of two released Nirvana songs (one alternatively titled Laundry Room, [get it?]) as well as one of the working titles for their last studio album In Utero The first five winning entries receive a free generictrend.com t-shirt.

PEELING
Wire raceway and paint cleaning. A lot of the old paint on the concrete walls was peeling. So for a few weeks at the end of the working day I would scrape down a section here and there.

HOMEMADE DUCT CLAMP
Why don't you use duct-tape on ducts? I'm not really sure, but eventually the stuff just falls apart. Which is what happened here. So I made a clamp (modeled on the other ones in the basement) out of sheet metal.

FUCKING CEILINGS
Please excuse my language. The ceiling was a monster pain to get somewhat smooth. I'm just glad the rest of the ceiling was in decent shape.

LAUNDRY CHUTE COVER
That white stuff is caulk. Much easier to work with when you're tired. Have I given the line about doing work myself and not trusting others? When I do the work, it may not be top quality, but at least I know what the quality is.

WALL PENETRATION
No more copper supply line. It kinks really easily. Oops. So, I picked up this reinforced line. You'll notice the bottom of the beam has had quite a bit of scraping done. I also knocked out the plaster that was between the beam and return air duct.

PREP
Notice the amount of scraped paint. Notice the mop handle. That's right! Paint Prep!

WET FLOORS
Probably not much need for this picture, considering the previous. Notice the makings of the new wall raceway above the half wall.

BATHROOM
It was really crazy with all the greenboard in there. Makes you think you're going crazy. Notice the soffit in the upper right corner. Originally it was much smaller, but grew considerably to house more existing pipes and ducts.

OVERALL

PAINT!
Finally! I thought the day would never arrive. Concrete walls get brown paint (which ended up looking more olive drab) and drywall gets green.

PRIMER
Drywall received two coats of regular white paint. The same type that was used for the walls. No special primer or any of that sort of thing.

ROLLERS
The rest of the house was painted with disposable rollers, as was the beginning of the basement. But the area was so large that towards the end of the painting session hair would fall off the roller. That was no-good. So expensive reusable rollers were picked up. I recommend them.

CEILING
The hard work paid off. Look how nice that looks. This is one of the areas of the whole project that made me really happy.

CEILING 2
Much harder to see the ceiling defects.
